The Astoria was once again packed out for Mindless Self Indulgence’s If tour. The queue of anticipating fans was well around the venue hours before the doors even opened and as such a cheery and friendly atmosphere was created well before anyone took to the stage.

Once inside, there seemed little room to breathe as the site was teeming with fans of all ages, all sporting what appeared to be varying degrees of manic fashion sense as singer Jimmy would have approved of.

The support band, Robots in Disguise, was a superb choice of warm up act. With their own brand of electronic punk pop, they excited the audience and soon had the entire room jumping around in a crazed fashion. The back projections displayed several of the band’s music videos featuring figures such as Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt from hit comedy programme The Mighty Boosh. These back projections, however, were far too large for the screen they were being shown on and so the effect of them was lessened. The heavy dependence on their backing track was made prominent when their set was cut short due to the player not wanting to work anymore.

As a result of this, the wait for Mindless Self Indulgence was lessened slightly and the expectation and excitement could be felt surging through the already well charged air. Finally the band began to emerge on to the stage one member at a time, teasing the audience through the screams. Kitty settled herself in at the drum kit like a captain at the helm of a ship and drummed the other members on to the stage. Finally Jimmy exploded on to the stage with the world renowned Shut Me Up and the show began. The theatrics known of the band were not ignored either as Jimmy began hyping the audience with his own brand of humour by placing the microphone down the front of his trousers. The interaction between the band and the fans was well sustained as Jimmy frequently leapt into the press pit to reach the fans and even called one lucky girl on to the stage to sing the words to Faggot – she, however disappeared, leaving it to Jimmy once more.

The band’s antics didn’t improve over the course of the evening, Jimmy was seen to shout to the crowd ‘And they said it wasn’t gay night tonight!’ as well as him and Steve, Righ? asking for the crowd to throw them some cigarettes and lighters. As such a shower of nicotine went cascading toward the stage and during the next song Jimmy stubbed out the cigarette on his tongue and carried on singing.

Although being a tour to promote their new album, the set list included many of the old classics to ensure that people who hadn’t heard the new songs didn’t feel left out. Throughout the gig the room was alive, hardly staying still even between songs. The end of the show saw Jimmy stood at the front of the stage miming the words to There’s No Business Like Show Business, a typical trait of the band.

This tour shows a welcome return for the group. The songs performed off of the new album were seen to match the quality of their predecessors and so made for a thoroughly memorable and worthwhile night.
