Being Rock n Roll is one thing but being asked to review "The most Rock n Roll band in the World" as the UK's Melody Maker once called the Black Crowes is just a complete honour.
After entering the backstage press entrance - Ive always wanted to know what goes on backstage! I decided to join the fans queeing outside the Brixton Acadamey for a 1 night London only, sold out gig to hear what the general conversation topic was ...... as if I didnt already know!?
The first thing that struck me was that the Crowes have fans of all ages. Most of them were chatting about the fact that the Crowes havent recorded an album for the last 7 years and unfortunately, not many of them had heard the new album, Warpaint released on the 3rd March 2008. The biggest bulk of people were talking about how far they had to travel to get to the gig but most of all, they were reminiscing, the older ones that is, about some of their more favourable Crowe memories!
After copious amounts of Sandlewood incense had been lighten on stage and a few of the Crowes earlier albums had been played over the PA System in entirety, the lights dimmed and the legends, now joined by a second guitarist and a new keyboardist got a roof raising welcome as they struck up the first chords of Evergreen, one of their new tracks whilst standing firmly in their cowboy boots on their turkish mats.
The crowd cheered loudly after ever song but were mostly subdued during the sometimes lengthy renditions. They did however have a lot more response to past hits but all in all, it was an incredibly laid back and mellow gig. I personally wouldve preferred a few more of their more rocking songs but none were forthcoming.
Chris Robinson seems like a man of few words but looks like a rock n roll Jesus who commands a massive stage presence with his hippy rock n roll dancing.
Was it me or were others also disappointed to see that he now wears shoes on stage?
