Editor review
The 'Back and Beyond' EP is our first taste of the new Tygers of Pan Tang material, with two of the EP's five tracks coming off next years album 'Animal Instinct', and it was only after Thunder's Ben Mathews had finished mixing that a decision was even made to release the EP to the public.
It was a good decision.
While the Tygers have re-recorded 3 songs from their earlier work here, they fit seamlessly with the bands two new tracks, 'Live For Today' and 'Bury The Hatchet'. The Tygers are still the Tygers, but they have evolved their sound over the years, as you would expect, especially with only Robb Weir standing tall as an original member (although this lineup has been together now for longer than any previous lineup of the band), yet it has a sound that will surprise those that discount the band out of hand. Jacabo Meille, in his first official recording since taking over vocal duties with the band is superb throughout, and Weir has found himself a vocalist that really fits the direction the band is going in.
The classic rock feel of the EP has perhaps more in common with contemporary hard rock acts than they do with their NWOBHM roots. The old songs sound brand new, the new songs are going to leave you chomping at bit for the full album next year.
This is the sound of a band enjoying themselves, and wanting to share with the world. With Back and Beyond, the Tygers of Pan Tang and proving to the world that they are back, they are lean, keen, killing machines.
