Coming back with a new album, and never a band afraid to take steps into the unknown, it is perhaps almost with a certain amount of trepidation that you listen for the first time to material from Biff Byford and Saxon.
This is a band that unlike many of their contemporariness have never given music up for a day job, and display a savy with regard to the world around them that is sadly lacking from many of today's new bands, let alone those of more than two decades ago. It's also fair to say that Saxon have traditional not strayed too far in the music they make - they know who they are, and they know what they want to sound like.
So to Live to Rock, the first single (albeit download only) taken from the bands upcoming album Into The Labyrinth which is due early next year.
In as few simple words as possible... yes this fucking rocks. "I could have been a teacher... could you see me as a teacher?" croons Byford. Well no actually, I don't think any of us could, but we certainly can again see you as a rock n roll superstar. The Saxon star has been rising over recent years, and with the world turning back to rock n roll, 'Live To Rock' is an anthem for a new generation. It's melodic, but heavy enough to keep metal fans happy. It's got a good shout a long chorus, but yet also has some wicked guitar licks to keep even the most ardent air guitar hero happy when it comes on the sound system in their local watering hole.
It's a taster of what we can expect come January and the full album, and it's a taster that is sure to whet your appetite!
