Editor review
With the release of their 5th CD in Pathway, Nostradameus are proving that Power Metal can be strong aggressive, while still honoring the traditions of the genre.
Formed in 1998 in Gothenburg Sweden, the band have set out their stall to be a Power Metal band, but "a little bit "rawer" sound, more a la "Heavy-metal" compared to the ordinary "perfect, but a bit soft"-sound that´s quite common in the Power-metal scene today." And with Pathway they've certainly done this. You've still go the big guitar sound that won't leave fans of early Helloween feeling a million miles adrift of where the band are going, you've still got great vocal talent from frontman Freddy Persson, but what you've also got is hard and fast drums and an overall sound that wouldn't feel too out of place on a bill with a good thrash band.
That said, and as a fan of the kind of Power Metal that Nostradameus are supposing trying to distance themselves from, it's a good album. The things I like in my Power Metal are all here, and in a lot of ways in places even better than I would normally expect. I like the fact that the band sound more aggressive, that they sound "harder", but most importantly, I like the fact that throughout the album I can enjoy the talent of a vocalist that can at times still hit the high notes, and sing with passion and tune, and miraculously extend this rawer sound they're after.
The production is superb, and certainly a band well worth keeping an eye on over the coming years.
