Formed in Ipswich at the start of 2007 and having now relocated to London, melodic rockers Near have unleashed their debut EP 'Rain Inside' and it's certainly an interesting record.
The four tracks on the EP showcase a more pop rock style of melodic rock, which is quite refreshing when the market is currently flooded with bands playing a bland harder rock edged style, and with some interesting arrangements, this record certainly comes out sounding a lot better for it. That's not to detract from the heavier bands out there on the melodic rock scene, but sometimes it's nice to hear a band taking their own route.
The band cite influences from as far afield as Pink Floyd and Metallica, and in some ways you can almost hear them all in the record. Don't pick up the record expecting huge guitar solos, but what you will get is some nicely constructed songs that are enjoyable to listen to.
They're not going to tear up the dancefloor in your favourite club, but then they're not going to be out of place in a rotation in your front room that includes the likes of Portishead, Floyd or even a little Rush.
It's not prog rock, but you know, it could be one day if they keep following the same path.
