Title
Thrill Of The Chase
Swedish rockers M.ill.ion encourage us to get lost in the 'Thrill Of The Chase', the opening title track to their new album. With a fairly easy-going sound, most of the songs on this album would not be out of place during one of those drive time radio shows we all tune in to while making the long journey back home from a hard day's grind.
Second track 'Menace To Society' is listenable yet forgettable while 'Slave To You' with it's intruiging intro and catchy hook is so much better. 'The One Above' is dissapointing but then quality takes a substantial leap with 'Lonely In A Crowded Room'. Perhaps the most immediate song on the album (are those genuine classic keys I hear on this?) and one that would have slotted in nicely to Joe Lynn Turner's stint with 1980's era Rainbow. Talking of which, Ulrich Carisson's vocals are somewhat in the same style.
'UFO' is as mediocre as fillers get while 'From Heaven To Hell' is much better but still lacks real substance, a flaw that is displayed more on 'Son Of A Son' (despite some nice vocal harmonies), and is all too obvious during 'Through Eyes Of A Child' before things improve again dramatically when 'Beware The Wolf' takes an unexpected change of gear.
'Fires Of Siberia' is the heaviest and by far best song on the album with a lovely opening groove, but it's a real pity that just as the guitar work gets interesting and you're expecting Jonas Hermansson to soar off into a full blown classic, he instead runs out of puff in a little under 20 seconds.
Closer 'Reason To Believe' opens with a nice guitar riff but drifts off into mediocrity and I would have moved the running order to make this a mid album track.
M.ill.ion have enjoyed some very succesfull albums and some people will love this. Others - like me - may find it a bit of a mixed bag.
