If I was to offer you a soulful trip back to the glory days of rock and roll, would you be interested in taking me up on the offer? Do you miss days of yore when rock bands didn't scream everything, when jazz or soul were higher on the influence list than punk? All questions to ponder no doubt.
And that of course brings us to Lipstick Magazine, depsite the rather odd choice for the bands name, and to what they are offering you, the world of rock fans. Certainly the powerful tuneful voice of frontwoman Toni is going to be a huge draw to this band. She doesn't try to be anything more or less than she is, she's just the right side of sultry vocally, while still belting out a high powered attack.
The obvious comparisons to Vixen (well despite the fact that this isn't an all girl band, but I digress) is perfectly valid in a lot of ways. 'Skin Deep' has a lot in common with the early days of Vixen's records, perhaps a little more laid back it's true. And how about Lita Ford? Yup, we can look at comparisons there too. But what about a little further afield? Why not look to the likes of the UK's own Dante Fox, certainly a credible linkup there as well.
'Skin Deep' is a solid album which mixes up rock n roll and weaves a very melodic rock thread straight through the middle, and it works. It works because Toni makes it work. Finding a vocalist that can do that is rare, and while the musicianship on this record isn't hugely mind blowing (and that's not a bad thing, I don't need to hear Yngwie Malmsteen guitar binges to make a song good) it's her voice that blends everything together.
Certainly recommended, certainly worth picking up, and I'm sure it's going to find a happy place in many peoples record collections.
