Title
Fields Of Yesterday
Never as popular as their dedicated fans thought they deserved to be, 'Lillian Axe' come back with this re mastered and expanded version of their 1999 rareties album "Fields Of Yesterday". This collection of mostly unreleased and unused tracks is interesting in that - unlike alot of other bands rareties albums, it could easily slot into their album catalogue.
Despite guitars sounding like a sleazier early Def Leppard, opening track 'Death Valley Daze' didn't really blow my skirt up, but 'Do It' has a very good beginning and is a mid paced rocker that continues the Def Leppard theme, sounding much like it could have been lifted straight off 'Pyromania'. The best track on the album, this is excellent and would have been amazing with a better chorus.
'Twilight In Hell' is structured around a repeating riff that goes right through you and gets you hooked. Thought this track rocked but was very cliched lyrically, a problem that spoils ballad 'For Crying Out Loud'. 'The Last Time' is pretty mediocre despite improving towards the end, while 'Calm Before The Storm' is better - both tracks again showing touches of Def Leppard in the guitar style.
'Pulling Out The Rats' is titled after a strange sexual reference and is one of the best tracks here, with up front drums mixed against riffing guitars giving an in your face sound. 'When It Rains' trys to be one of those enormous show stopping ballads that everyone remembers but never reaches the heights it aspires to, and 'Daddy Longlegs' has some great guitar but seriously crappy lyrics.
'Blood On The Moon' contains a nice solo and is very bombastic. Things slow down a little for 'Kill Me Again' before turning bombastic again on 'Become A Monster' - a track that lets the band rock out more and has a screeching guitar line.
This re-mastered version contains 2 new tracks, 'Throw You Away' (nice solo otherwise forgettable) and 'Thirst' which has a very catchy phased guitar sound.
While these tracks won't win any awards for their lyrical content, the musicianship and production are very respectable. Effectively a collection of B-sides and for the most part good old fashioned rockers, these are mostly worth being released and should find their way into every fans collection. Nice cover too.
