Job for a cowboy - Genesis - 2007

As a more or less complete noob on Death metal I actually laughed upon the request on doing a

review of this.

After I received the promotion copy and had heard it one time I noticed that I will need the

lyrics to all tracks to even be able to find out what this is all about.

Google is my friend :)

So it also were proved this time to be as well....

JOB FOR A COWBOY is a band from Glendale, Arizona. USA

According to their myspace.com site they are into

Metal / Death Metal / Progressive

Meet the band:

Brent Riggs - Bass

Jonny Davy - Vocals

Ravi Bhadriraju - Guitar

Bobby Stevens - Guitar

Jon "The Charm" Rice - Drums

Former member and also writer and the man behind the recording of the album.

Elliott Sellers - Drums

Elliott officially left the band last autumn to move on to other projects

but stayed for writing material and do the recording of the album.

From JOB FOR A COWBOY's website:

October 15, 2006

"Well for starters, heres a new website! Goes along a bit more with our upcoming full length that we're still working on. A lot of new info will be put up within the next upcoming days, so keep checking for that. Its been over a week now that we have recently departed with our past drummer Elliott Sellers. We'll definatelly be missing him, but he's left to move on to do other things with his life. So, pretty much the drummer search continues as we continue to write our upcoming full length with the remaining four members."

November 13, 2006

"As of right now we're still working on our debut full length, we're getting near the completion of the project. Elliott Sellers, our old drummer, has stepped and is acctually going to write and record our new album. After his work on the album he will step out of the band for other projects that he has in mind."

As of March 28 they announced that they had officially completed the writing and recording.

At the same time they officially announced that the album will be released May 15th on Metal Blade Records.

Now when that is said, you also know that the album has already been released by the time of writing.

The album:

10 Tracks

30 min 48 sec (on promo CD)

The listening:

As I stated in the beginning, I am a complete noob to growling Death Metal. Yes I have heard some but far from enough (as I am trying to learn to listen to the Genre and what it is all about. Guess someone picked that up and asked me to do the review. Thank you! *eg*)

Track 1 - 'Bearing the serpent's lamb'

Parts of lyrics

"Beneath the rib cage lay a sweltering child. A child forcing and pushing outward for decapment of his mother's womb. Bearing a bastard child. Bearing what is now the son of the new world's lord. Bearing the serpent's lamb"

And a few lines later..

"Why would a God allow such deep evil? Theodicy!"

I had to listen to this a few times.. As for music it is ok, as for lyrics, well I honestly don't know, I needed the lyrics written to understand or even hear any of it.

The little growling I've heard before I could at least hear what were "said".

Track 2 - 'Reduced to mere filth'

Same thing here, without the lyrics written out I would've been listening to pure growling

without hearing more than a few words here and there. As for music it sounds good.

And it goes on with track 3 - 'Altered from catechization'

Track 4 - 'Upheaval to heaven' Which is instrumental, and a needed pause in the story

told (yes the album is trying to tell a story, carry or a theme sort of).

Track 5 - 'Embedded'

Track 6 - 'Strings of hypocrisy'

Track 7 - 'Martyrdom unsealed'

Story continues...

Track 8 - 'Blasphemy'

Yet another pause - Instrumental

Track 9 - 'The divine falsehood'

and the final

Track 10 - 'Coalescing prophecy'

From track 10...

"And he opened his mouth in blasphemy deluding their designated God.

His men and women all carry a sacrament of his number.

These followers with their morality of conscionable age have left behind the sign of the

cross and redemption.

They have mindlessly chosen the path of social standards.

The path of conformity, with the mark of eternal damnation.

"Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the

wrath of the lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come!"

The sixth for-warning trumpet sirens, following the demonic armies that surface

from the open wounds of earth.

They march toward bloodshed and warfare against humanity, the limbs and remains

from the carcass of man extend across open land.

These once depleted seas and rivers now flourish with vital fluids and bones of

conforming followers.

Future existent worlds coalesce into one."

All and all rating:

Lyrics: 7

Vocals: 6

Music: 7

Album art: 8

Story: 6 (as I also wants to hear the story, not read it to be able to "hear it")

Would I recommend this album?

Well it is a debut album and as such I think I would need a different vocal performance

not necessarily a new vocalist, to appreciate it fully.

Short answer is therefor a No.

For you who into this genre much more then I am or ever will be. Give it a try!

Best of luck in future to the band. Hope the current tour goes well
