Market Harbour

Ginger is an icon. From The Wildhearts to his days with The Quireboys, he's been an institution in the British rock scene for ever. And now we're back to Ginger on his own, as he returns with his latest solo album 'Market Harbour'.

Why does it always seem that Ginger's never happy? Not that I'm complaining, because the tracks here are awesome, but I sometimes wonder where his pain comes from, not too deeply mind, I don't really want to know, but just listening to the sorrowful opener of the album, Casino Bay, sucks me right in, makes me really care about what he's go to say. While the track, in theory at least, is an uplifting song about moving on, Ginger's managed to turn it in a darker direction, leaving me only feeling the sense of loss that he's feeling.

If you like your music darkly passionate, then hop on this ride, because we're only just starting. While this isn't a concept album, I really feel that it needs to be listened as a whole rather than picking single tracks. There's no break in the tracks, one flows into the next, sometimes with a smooth, orchestrated transition, others like a freight train hitting a brick wall and smashing through.

'My baby don't want me anymore'. What more can you say to that? Ginger writes from the soul, tells it like it is, and leaves you in no doubt that you can actually see every single emotion and event he sings about. 'And no amount of drinking is going to stop me thinking'. We've all been there right?

There's a lot for Wildhearts fans to pick up on here, but this is more than a Wildhearts album. 21 tracks, with various interludes that shape the albums progression. I don't want to spoil them all for you, because half the joy of this album was finding out where it was going.

This might be one of the best albums Ginger has been involved in with for many a long year. Yes, I really feel it's that good. It has a guest list as long as my arm, but this is Ginger pure and simple and to the point.
