Calling The Earth To Witness

Editor review

Formed in the West of Sweden during 2003, Darkwater have done only a few selected shows across Sweden, while working on the material that makes up Calling the Earth To Witness, which they recorded during late 2006 before signing with Ulterium Records in early 2007.

Mastered by Göran Finnberg (In Flames, The Haunted, Dark Tranquility) you can be perhaps forgiven for expecting a lot from the album. The band talk about being hugely influenced by Dream Theater, Symphony X and Evergrey, and that especially the former really shine through on the album, perhaps if anything too much. There's nothing wrong with drawing influence from other bands, but at times on the album, it almost seems that Darkwater are trying to be Dream Theater, rather than carving out their own sound. Luckily, they've done a reasonable job of it, otherwise this could have been cringe worthy.

Calling The Earth To Witness is an enjoyable listen, and certainly shows signs of where Darkwater could be heading, but they still have some way to go. The production is superb, and what you would expect from those involved behind the scenes, and the band have managed to craft some solid songs, 'Again' being a personal favorite, and in time I hope they build on that, and the followup to this album shows a move forward into their own sound, drawing less on the Dream Theater influence.

Solid and safe Melodic Metal it is, and fans of the genre aren't going to be disappointed.
