Sands Of Desolation

Newcastle metallers Beyond The Grave's third EP 'Sands of Desolation' shows a new, more polished side to an up and coming metal band the UK can be proud of. This is classic metal, verging on proper old school thrash, and it's good to see a UK based band in a position to put there name on the map.

The guitar work is superb, with the band combining the dual talents of Luke Harrison and Warwick Bennett, and it's this foundation that leads the band on strongly, with a driving rhythm section behind them.

This isn't the final product either, you can tell that, and that's what makes 'Sands of Desolation' even more exciting when you fire it up. It's not so much what's in front of you right now - and that's pretty damn fine even if I do say so - but what the band are going to become if they keep the progression up.

I've raved in the past about Warbringer in the past, and perhaps Beyond the Grave may well become the UK's answer, albeit heading in a slightly melodic and even death metal direction.

Interesting isn't it, that it's quite hard to quite put your finger on where these guys are coming from, and where they're going.

In fact, the only real criticism has to be on the vocals themselves which at times seem weak in comparison with the music around them. I think Adam Jackson is heading toward a Max Cavellera style of vocals, and he just isn't nailing it yet. Maybe by the time the band drop their first full length we'll be talking differently?

All in all, this is an excellent snap shot of a band that could well be about ready to storm the UK. Keep a close watch!
