Title

Standing the Test of Time

When the re-release of the back catalogue of these illustrious Metal stalwarts triggered one of the biggest comebacks in recent times, I bet vocalist Bob Mitchell had no idea it would lead to rave reviews of worldwide live performances and an album of which he can be justly proud.

In this incarnation, Attacker are Mitchell on vocals, Mike Benetatos and Pat Marinelli on guitar, Lou Ciarlo on bass and Mike Sabatini on drums. This is almost the original line-up, who brought the world The Battle of Helm’s Deep (1985) and can claim to be probably the first band to use openly Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings as inspiration. To that extent, maybe they should be seen as a more prog band, but the music rocks as much as ever.

Standing the Test of Time is a truly exceptional production of Metal excellence. Not a chord wrong. Lyrically harmonized. I have no idea how old Mitchell is, but he can sure belt out a song. The sound crosses between Rock and Power Metal with aplomb, and the guitars duel with consummate skill. The rhythm section is beyond compare.

OK, so they are truly superb at what they do. If it weren’t for the hugely positive response they received when on the road last year, then I’d be wondering if there was really room for such a dated sound in the Metal world of 2008. Legions of faithful fans will ensure this sells well, without a doubt. Whether the ranks will be swelled is another matter entirely.

The back catalogue is now available through Chavis/Sentinel Steel Records.
