Having made his name with both Angra and Viper, Brazilian vocalist Andre Matos is about ready to unleash his concoction of progressive power metal on the world, well apart from Japan, where they know all about 'Time To Be Free', after it spent spending a month at #2 on the Japanese charts, besting both Heaven and Hell and Metallica. Pretty big endorsement right there I think.
Matos' has drawn on what he knows, recruiting the majority of the band on this record from previous incarnations of Angra, and his last band Shaamen, and that I think has really aided this record in sounding far tighter, and close knit that is often the case with a bands debut effort.
So progressive power metal? It's about where this record sits. It's certainly got a lot of power metal influence here, as you would expect, with Matos' previous credentials stacking up in that area, but it also has a fair amount of what can only be looked on as Prog Metal hooks in there. It's interesting and it really works.
Matos' is also a pianist, and by opening the album with the short piano intro of Menuett which leads straight into Letting Go, you get the impression that this is a very classical inspired power metal album. It's great, and Matos has a voice that really suits the style, and has written songs that really feed of his voice, the music wraps itself around him, tendril like.
Jump forward and we hit Remembering Why, and it's almost as though Matos' has been listening to Dream Theater and decided, I can have a go at that, and he kicks out something that you wouldn't be disappointed to hear coming from Kamelot or Symphony X, and from here on out, that's really where this album seems to be going, and all for the better as far as I'm concerned.
The talent on this record is superb, and if Matos' can maintain this level on future releases, it wouldn't surprise me to find him being talked about in the same breath as both Kamelot and Symphony X, and looking on up the road to Dream Theater. Highly recommended.
