Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) students were recently delighted to receive an exclusive masterclass from one of its finest visiting faculty members Professor Richard Smith.Â
Smith is currently touring the UK showcasing his new album ‘L.A. Chillharmonic’ and was accompanied during his visit to ICMP by the elite members of his touring band - Sieste Huisman, one of Holland’s top drummers, Naples-based electric bassist Daniele Labbate and top keyboardist on the Dutch scene, Tico Pierhagen.
As Professor of Studio/Jazz guitar at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music (one of the top US conservatoires), Smith understands the importance of educational excellence and was able to offer the students at ICMP a wealth of experience as an award-winning recording artist, performer and clinician. His outstanding career has earned him accolades such as Record of the Year (Tune Up Magazine), a nomination for Best Jazz Album of the Year (Ad Lib Magazine), best new artist (Radio and Records Magazine) and three top five jazz albums.Â
The masterclass was delivered at the ICMP’s facilities in Kilburn, London on Tuesday June 16th. Smith and his band opened by performing three numbers taken from the new album, followed by an insightful tutorial including a question & answer session.Â
The night came to an end with an outstanding high-energy performance by Richard and ICMP guitar tutor Dario Cortese. After the event Richard and his band spent some valuable time sharing best practice with groups of inspired students.
