Metal Exiles recently spoke with Nevermore Frontman Warrel Dane who released his debut solo album Praises to the Warmachine via Century Media Records in April.
Several excerpts from the interview are included below.
Q: I have always admired you as a songwriter and this album is no different. Where did the material for this record come from?
A: "With Peter we started out in the beginning building songs and
strong choruses which gives the record a “rock” vibe. We worked really
hard on these songs and even though they sound simplistic they were not
easy to put together. It can be hard to come up with a good hook and
chorus. A lot of people will compare this to Nevermore though."
Q: Well you cannot get away from what you sound like, nobody
sounds like Warrel Dane so of course they will compare this to
Nevermore. But in a lot of ways it is not Nevermore, it is your own
thing.
A: "Nevermore stuff can be really crazy, technical, progressive
stuff and if you are in that mindset then some of these songs on my
solo can seem simple."
Q: Some of the Nevermore stuff can be drawn out by Jeff Loomis.
A: "By the way, I just heard the new Jeff Loomis solo record, it
is fucking insane. I am not sure if he has a release date yet though. I
will say this, he did the polar opposite of me, he went as far over the
top as possible and as self indulgent as he possibly could. It will be
probably be out by the end of the year."
