Van Halen Song Stirring It Up Print E-mail

van_halen_live08.jpgThe Delco Times reports that the unofficial theme song for the John McCain/Sarah Palin ticket is "Right Now," the hit song by Van Halen, and as with anything involving the most engaging soap opera in rock and roll, it's causing a bit of friction between former and current members of the group.

Publicist for the band Janie Liszweski said the group was unaware that McCain planned to use the song.

"Had they asked, permission would not have been granted," she said.

Liszweski speaks for the Eddie and Alex Van Halen, the only current members of VH who had anything to do with the 1992 song. Bassist Wolfgang Van Halen wasn't even a year old when the track charted, and David Lee Roth was dealing with a fledgling solo career at that point.

Sammy Hagar, the twice-ousted Van Halen singer who wrote "Right Now," released a statement approving the use of the song.

"When I wrote the lyrics to 'Right Now' I intended them to inspire people to not sit around and wait for something they believed in but to go out and get it -- to make a change however they needed to," he said. "Whether it was McCain who used the song or if Obama had chosen to use the song, with the current political climate, the lyrics still have the same meaning, and we all need to do something to make a difference, every action counts."

"In fact, I still feel so strongly about this that I wrote a new song 'Cosmic Universal Fashion' with a young Iraqi musician in an attempt to motivate a new generation to the same affect. I am pleased to be associated with the lyrics to my original song and the new one in hopes that both will make people move to make a difference."

Hagar may be telling the truth, but he is pimping a new song and also did an invite-only show at the legendary First Avenue nightclub in Minneapolis this week to help kick off the Republican National Convention, so it's not like he's completely free of agenda or bias.
