The Marin Independent Journal reports that Sammy Hagar, heavy metal's Red Rocker, former
lead singer of Van Halen, is looking to show his mellow Marin friends
and neighbors his "artsy fartsy" side when he performs with his Wabos
band Wednesday night at the 142 Throckmorton Theatre.
The show is a benefit for the nonprofit theatre, a 300-seat cultural
jewel in downtown Mill Valley, Hagar's longtime hometown. His goal is
to raise $150,000.
"I love this theater, and it's so cool that it's right here in Mill Valley," he says. "We need to keep it open."
Hagar, who lives in Mill Valley with his wife and two school-age daughters, is planning a more subdued evening than he would if this were one of his big, bombastic arena concerts.
"I'm going to do more obscure songs, which I normally wouldn't do, more acoustic-type stuff," he explains. "I'll probably do 'I Can't Drive 55,' maybe at the end. But it's not going to be me going up and doing all hits. It's more like me going up and being artsy fartsy."
The benefit is part of the 60-year-old Hagar's effort to give back to a Marin and Bay Area community that has sometimes overlooked him, thinking of him as a Los Angeles rock star.
"In all the years I was in Van Halen, a very L.A. band, I never got accepted as a local guy, and it used to hurt my feelings," he says. "There would be local musicians doing this or that benefit, but I was never asked to do them, I was never included. I got snubbed. And it bothered me because I'm completely a Mill Valley guy since 1972."
With benefits like next week's, Hagar is changing that perception of him as an outsider.
