According to The Irish Independent thrash metal kingpins Metallica are about to release a new album -- the first since 'Some Kind of Monster' captured the band in a state of Woody Allen-esque emotional meltdown whilst they strove to complete 2003's 'St Anger'.
Recorded as they flirted with breaking up, 'St Anger' was uneven and indulgent, but the follow-up, 'Death Magnetic', finds them following the example of U2 and REM and returning assuredly to many of their old tropes.
'Death Magnetic' doesn't come out until next month and Metallica are careful not to alienate the audience with too much unfamiliar material.
Of the smattering of new songs, the unreconstructed metal howl of 'Cyanide' is the immediate stand-out.
Viking-proportioned frontman James Hetfield plunges into the opening lick as if it's the best thing he's ever written -- it isn't, but it's heartening to see a 45-year-old father-of-three throw himself so unabashedly into a song.
Starting with 'Creeping Death', Metallica deliver an efficient greatest hits set, with the occasional obscurity -- 'The Four Horsemen' -- but largely dependent on old favourites -- 'Enter Sandman', 'Kill 'Em All', and a cover of 'Whiskey in the Jar'.
Metallica lovers, you suspect, wouldn't have it any other way.
