Typical fans of Heavy Metal music have low self esteem and don't like to work hard a new report issued by Heriot-Watt University in Scotland has found.
The report which analysed answers from 36,000 music fans tastes and personalities also found that compared to fans of other genres, metal fans were more gentle and at ease with themselves.
The report is the first time that these relationships have been studied in detail.
Indie fans appeared to be very similar to metal fans, although the report said they tended to be more creative, while fans of chart and reggae tended to have high confidence levels.
Proffessor Adrian North commented that "If you know a person's music preference you can tell what kind of person they are, who to sell to,” he said.
"There are obvious implications for the music industry who are are worried about declining CD sales.
"One of the most surprising things is the similarities between fans of
classical music and heavy metal. They're both creative and at ease but
not outgoing.
"The general public has held a stereotype of heavy metal fans being
suicidally depressed and of being a danger to themselves and society in
general. But they are quite delicate things."
