Sweden's
Fatal Smile first formed way back in 1995, but it seems like only
with the release of the bands latest album 'World Domination' that
the band have started to gain a foot hold in the minds of rock fans
the world over.
With
World Domination, the bands mainman Y has pulled together a tight
knit band, dedicated to blending influences which date back as far as
the 70's, while seemingly wanting to stay away from pigeon holing
themselves into anyone genre. They don't think of themselves as a
glam or sleaze band, no matter what many critics may try and tell
them.
Hitting
the UK for the first time as part of the Pretty Boy Floyd, Britny Fox
and Bulletboys tour, Komodo Rock's Tazz Stander caught up with the
band to find out more about where they see themselves, where the band
are heading, and of course, why fans around the world need to sit up
and take note.
It
is the first night of a 5 day UK Tour - What are you hoping to
achieve out of this tour?
Blade: A lot of fun, a
good tour, a few beers ....
Alx:
And lots of new fans!
You have a very recognisable
name in Europe and the U.S.A but are still relatively unknown in the
U.K. Is this how you planned your World Domination or is the
U.K. Market harder to crack?
Y: No actually, we
haven't even tried yet. This is the World Domination Part 1,
The U.K. We're going to be back with Vince Neil in December but
we're starting off with 1 week on this tour. [Since the interview,
and due to circumstances beyond the bands control, Fatal Smile have
since had to announce that they will no longer be touring with Vince
Neil in the UK.]
Blade:
Also, we just haven't been able to come over here before.
We've been in the States and all over Europe and we have always
wanted to come here and we're so happy to be here finally.
Y:
We really believe in the U.K.
Blade:
We actually love being here so we want fans here so we can have
a reason to come back as often as possible
Prior
to your current line-up, you had 2 albums produced by Jonas Ostman
[Yngwie Malmsteen's Producer] but your Album, World Domination was
produced by yourself Y and mixed by Michael Wagner [Metalicca /
Motley Crue]. Why was this decision made and has it been a
successful one?
Y:
I grew up with all the albums that Michael either mixed or
produced so it just felt natural to have him mix this whole album for
us. It's turned out really great and it was a complete honour
to work with him - so far, so good. We are very proud of this
album. It's kicking ass!
I
think a good description of Fatal Smile's style is "A music
mixture of heavy and raw classical metal with strong modern
characteristics". Do you agree or would you add to this
description?
Blade:
That's a good description yeah! I've heard it described as Glam
and Sleaze and I just don't get it! A lot of the reviews have
said this is sleaze at its best and I'm like, "OK, I didn't know
that"!
Y:
Our sound is all from the 70's, 80's up to today and we just
try to crank it up and we've turned out exactly like the latest
album.
Blade:
I think we have the groove of the 70's, the melodies of the
80's and the edge and rawness of the 2000 and something's.
And
very exciting news!!! Youre on tour with Vince Neil from the 3rd to
18th December 2008. How did this come about?
Blade:
How the hell did that happen?
Y:
When we were on tour in the USA for 2 months, we played in L.A.
a few times and we got connected with some good guys that helped us
out with our tour and one thing led to another and we ended up on the
Vince Neil tour.
I
heard from the British Promoter that it was only Tigertailz and
Rock$tar as support bands so was pretty concerned when I heard this!
I'm glad that you can now officially confirm that you are on
the tour!
Y:
That is probably because we were confirmed once the fliers were
printed.
Blade:
We've also heard this a lot. "Are you supporting
Vince Neil or what?", but for the record we are supporting Vince
Neil.
Y:
Fuck Yeah!
Your
first Single, S.O.B has now been officially released as a video - any
more videos planned in the near future?
Blade:
Yeah, well the first thing we're going to do is Dominate the
World (laughs).
Y:
We've just finished shooting the video and we're hoping to get
some airtime on M.T.V in America and in Europe. It was lots of
fun shooting it but it's more fun watching it now - we put a lot of
work into it.
If
I can make a suggestion, I think your track "Run for you life"
should be the next video that you do.
Blade:
Well, we're pleased to tell you that this is exactly what our
plan is!
As
noted earlier in this interview, Fatal Smile will no longer be
joining Vince Neil on his upcoming UK dates, although these had, at
the time of this interview, been confirmed. The band will however support the Motley Crue frontman on his mainland European dates.
Those dates are:
