Nottingham based rockers Snakeskin draw influence from Motley Crue, Skid Row and Bon Jovi among others, proper 80's rock n roll influences, and they're getting ready to hit the road for a UK tour in October, so we thought it was about time we found out a little more about who Snakeskin are and why you should go out and catch them live.
Komodo Rock: For those that are new to Snakeskin, can you give us a little background on the band?
Scott Clarke (Bass): Well, Ive only been in the band since around January So not really in much authority to comment, Leave this one for you dude
Chris Else (Guitar): We're from Nottingham and the current line up came together at the start of the year. We've changed singer once too. Our first gig was in February 2005. We're basically play straight up in your face hard rock!
How did the name come about?
Scott: And this one
Chris: It was chosen form a list of about 10 that our old singer wrote in his maths book at school! The original band idea started back in 2004 when we were still in school. I really liked the Snakeskin name, it just felt right. (I'm also a massive fan of Whitesnake so I liked the similarity)
Put on the spot, which 3 bands have influenced the band the most?
Chris: Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses and Whitesnake
Scott: In my mind, I feel we take inspiration from Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, and Bon Jovi.
Theres so many amazing bands out there that weve individually been affected by, and when we all play together it seems to make a massive fusion between them all.
What's the biggest gig you've ever played?
Chris: We played at this years Americana Festival at Newark Showground. We were second headliners on our stage and played to about 3000 our biggest by a long way!
Scott: Americana Festival, this year. Fuck me. That was a good one. Our biggest crowd and we all seemed to find ourselves out there, I mean the atmosphere was spot-on and thats all you can really ask for. Musically I think were on the best form weve been on and the crowd could really feel how much we need the stage. Theres nothing like it.
If you could put together your dream 3 band tour, who'd you pick?
Scott: I would order Mr. Big to re-unite (with Paul Gilbert) That band seriously blow me away, each member of that band is at such a high quality and together its even better Billy Sheehan. Says it all.
Guns n Roses, and Motley Crue.
Chris: Us of course! And the original Guns + Motley Crue would be amazing! We'd have to go on first though cause theres no way I could play after rocking so hard to those guys!
What's the highest point of your career so far?
Chris: I'd say playing the festival and getting this tour confirmed, it finally feels like were moving forward as a band.
And the lowest?
Chris: Playing to empty rooms is always disheartning, luckily that hasnt happened for a while, this year has been absolutely brilliant for us so far.
Scott: Sleeping in a van with no seats, I say sleeping, more of laying there, wearing about 4 hats as a pillow and listening to Rikki [Rikki Wilkinson - Vocals] rant on like a mentalist. End of.
In 12 months time, where do you see the band being, and what will you be doing?
Chris: Obviously we'd love to be signed to a label, we'll definitely be touring again early next year, and the plan is to get a good following in the UK and hopefully get over to America.
Scott: I wanna be throwing in my notice to my job and doing this kinda thing for a living. Theres nothing like it, I really dont think I could work in an office for the rest of my days.
You've announced a self promoted UK Tour for later this year. Can you tell us a little more about it, and how hard it's been to set up?
Scott: Christoph?
Chris: Touring is something we've always wanted to do and we just felt that the way this years been going we'd go for it. We've got the money for a van so we just thought it'd be a great experience and also beneficial for the band.
It has been difficult to book to be honest without any backing of any kind but the venues we are booked into have all been great and really helpful. Its down to us now to make it worthwhile by promoting it properly.
You've been recording recently, any plans for an EP or Album in the near future?
Chris: Our EP will be available very shortly, we're just sorting artwork for it at the moment. We have more than enough material for a full length album, but not enough money to record one!
Scott: Definitely, asap really. After this tour we will really be getting down to it.
Other than yourselves, who do you rate as the best up and coming rock 'n' roll band out there?
Chris: I really like Headrush, Zen Motel are pretty damn awesome too.
Scott: Headrush are a quality band, if you havent seen em http://www.myspace.com/headrushrocks
