Disarm have been paying their dues over the last few years, building a fan base because of their live shows. They've toured with Korey Clarke's Dirty Rig and Robin Black among others, and have just recently been holed up in the studio working on their debut album.
So who are Disarm? We caught up with the band to find out more.
Komodo Rock: For those that are new to the Disarm, can you give us a little background on the band?
Ant (Drums): Better ask the others about that one, I've only just been born into the disarm family.
Brad (Vocals and Guitar): Three people wanted to play rock 'n' roll when everybody was getting a cool haircut instead.
Noddy (Bass and Backing Vocals): Background on the band? Background? Well for the last year
we have done tons of shows and got through alot of alcohol and alot of
drummers.
How did the name come about?
Ant: Apparently from the Smashing Pumpkins song - which is amazing!
Brad: I was lied to. I never knew it was from that Smashing Pumpkins song until it was too late. I like that song though so it's cool.
Noddy: Me and Jamie fought in Nam and we didn't like it that much so we thought we'd write folk songs about it and try and disarm the war
Put on the spot, which 3 bands have influenced the band the most?
Brad: I have no idea. We've ended up in a totally different direction from when we started doing this. At first it was kind of Backyard Babies, Hellacopters type stuff and now, for me anyway, it's a more G.U. Medicine balls-out, groove, rock 'n' roll type thing.
What's the biggest gig you've ever played?
Ant: Hmm since I've been with the band I'm not sure of the biggest, but the best would have to be the Purple Turtle in Camden on the Trashstock Tour.
Brad: Yeah, that was awesome. I honestly don't know though. I guess I like the hot and sweaty intimate shit.
Noddy: Big can mean so many things. Biggest stage was probably at the Harlequin Theater in Redhill. Biggest PA...ain't got a clue. Biggest crowd... erm.... Can't remember, probably London Underworld with RFB [Robin Black].
If you could put together your dream 3 band tour, who'd you pick?
Brad: Including us? Us, G.U. Medicine, David Bowie. If not us then G.U. Medicine, David Bowie, Juliette and The Licks (but without 'The Licks'). I really can't think of anything. Maybe John Carpenter doing the 'Escape From New York' theme and some of his other stuff in between sets, i don't know.
Ant: Not including us... Pantera X3 (RIP Dime)!!!
Noddy: Probably us, BYB's & Turbonegro.
What's the highest point of your career so far?
Ant: Playing with the great bands on the Trashstock tour.
Brad: I'm alive with two testicles (my actual balls, not Noddy and Jamie).
Noddy: Me and Jamie at Bradford Rios on the RFB tour. ...we were pretty high then.
And the lowest?
Ant: 70mph M1 vomit.
Brad: Nothing really bad but i guess earlier this year being stuck without a drummer 3 or 4 days before we were going on tour.
Noddy: The post tour blues from all of our tours
Your currently working on your debut album. What can we expect, and when can we expect to hear it?
Ant: Release is due for early next year... expect some older songs and a boat load of awesome new ones on a shiny disc in a plastic case.
Noddy: I don't think we even know what to expect, the material we have is really different from song to song and I have no idea how were gonna put it together to sound "together" but it'll just sound like us. I suppose and you'll be able to hear a couple of songs and maybe we can squeeze out a single for the September tour, it all depends on what when, where and how things happen in the next couple of months
Brad: We're just want to distance ourselves from any scene or trends so we've just written whatever we've felt like doing and hopefully gone in our own direction. Some of it's shit-loads heavier, some of it's kind of catchy & bouncy (to us anyways) but it still sounds like us. I'm really proud of the stuff we've got and can't wait to hear it all recorded.
Rumour has it that your working on putting together a full UK tour for September. Any dates you can share?
Ant: The dates have just been announced :D
Brad: It covers pretty much all of England. Sorry, we're shit for Scotland but I think there's some Wales dates. We've got a date in London and the line-up is INCREDIBLE...
[And yes, we revealed the full Tour Schedule yesterday here on Komodo Rock. Check it out here Ed.]
Where in particular are you hoping to be able to take the tour?
Noddy: Everywhere and anywhere, so if you're interested let us know.
Brad: Guatemala
In the past you've toured with rock heavyweights like LA Guns, Dirty Rig and Robin Black. What's that been like?
Noddy: Awesome, the tours have been a really good learning process and have made us a better band. I cant remember the LA guns tour, can you?
Brad: That's slipped my mind somehow. We've been lucky to tour with bands who are really respected & admired but aren't on some massive fucking ego trip. Pretty much everyone we've met have been cool and stuck around to get drunk afterwards and not fucked off to the spa.
Ant: I missed out on that :-(
In 12 months time, where do you see the band being, and what will you be doing?
Brad: Naked, screaming, and on fire.
Noddy: I see us doing what we've always done just on a bigger scale and a lot more new material coming out as we now have a permanent drummer, which is the only thing that has held us back at this point
Other than yourselves, who do you rate as the best up and coming glam/sleaze band out there?
Brad: I'm not bothered much about the glam/sleaze scene but I love my bruddas in New Generation Superstars, Zen Motel, Laruso, Patchwork Grace Imperial Vipers, MAEVEN, Ten Foot Dolls, and Dear Superstar. Any anyone else I've forgot.
Noddy: GU Medicine.
Brad: Fuck, yeah! They're incredible.
Ant: Kenny Bollock and the Jizz Men
Brad: Ha ha! Yeah, they're frickin' sweet!
Let us know any important web links and where we can buy your stuff.
Brad: Go to http://www.myspace.com/disarmmusic and drop us a message. We'll bang some stuff together, stuff it in a bag, and post it to you. You might get a free gift. We have some new merch coming out soon too so keep checking back and give us some money in exchange for things. Really, we're broke.
A big thank you to Disarm for talking with us, and make sure you catch them on the road from August, and we'll bring you more information on the album as we get it.
